We presented the Indigenous Australia: Masterworks from the National Gallery of Australia exhibition at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi from
15 June to 26 August 2018 as the curtain raiser for Australia Fest. The exhibition offered Indian audiences a glimpse of the world’s oldest continuous
culture and history.
Today, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art is recognised internationally as an exciting, major contribution to world art and an expression of deep humanity and unity with nature. The exhibition presented significant works produced by Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from the late 1800s through to today, drawn exclusively from the National Gallery of Australia’s extensive collection. Works in the exhibition included paintings on canvas and bark, weaving and sculpture, new media, prints and photography.
The exhibition was presented in partnership with India’s Ministry of Culture.
“A rare collection of what could possibly be one of the earliest art forms in human history, is on view in Delhi for the first time,” said art critic Meera Menezes about the Indigenous Masterworks exhibition in an article in Mint.
